Uninhibited and feminine

Dina

Sydney based multi media artist and interior designer Dina Broadhurst has decorated her inner city art deco apartment with treasures she has found around the globe. Dina has kept the interiors white and airy, acting as a canvas for her ever-revolving art, vintage furniture and photographic collections. In her words ‘anything can become a piece of art whether it’s a side table or a light fitting’

Dina is truly an inspiring IT girl of the Sydney design scene. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the beautiful Art deco apartment she shares with her young son Leo. Like Dina, this apartment oozes style, in keeping with the Elizabeth bay location, which has traditionally been a harbour side suburb 10 mins from the CBD, but an enclave of the creative and bohemian. Dina’s apartment was a blank canvas, which she cleverly transformed on a modest budget of $60,00aud. It did have what one would describe as great bones, however,it took a lot of vision to see beyond the deep blue carpets and purple walls. “The proportions were good, but the chunky sandstone-block fireplace that had been added totally dwarfed the living room. “ To keep within her small budget, she kept the existing floor plan, but knocked out the wall separating the living room from the kitchen.

Dina describes her interior design style as “uninhibited and feminine”, with a strength and richness brought about by layering. Almost nothing in her apartment furniture is bought new. The living room sofa is a beautiful caramel leather Afra and Tobia Scarpa, purchased on a trip to Paris. This is complemented by an Oliver Mourgue chaise and a quirky 60s light fitting bought at a flea market.

What really make this apartment work is Dinas passion for photography, her collection includes work by new York based Australian photographer Daniela Federici, and Sydney based photographer Simon Lekias. Photography has become a personal passion, her work has branched out into producing mixed media collages of her own. This is a girl going places, who juggles motherhood, work, art, and life with incredible energy. She is also known for her amazing fashion style, which like her interiors, screams sexiness and femininity, vintage with designer. Isabel Marant and Marni are favourites. This apartment is a wonderful base, compact and functional, from where her and leo can truly enjoy the urban delights of inner city living… This is a very glam, cool retreat.
