Living in boxes

The stainless steel and polished cement kitchen is a simple affair. The red seventies’ vase is part of Alessandro’s collection. He used 16 wooden boxes for the kitchen.

Architect Alessandro Capellaro, of q-bic architettura & design,  used 300 boxes to transform an antiquated woodworkers workshop in Florence into a personal home. Italian electoral ballot boxes bought an an auction for one euro several years ago. Each have been made into walls and inventive furniture. The idea of creating temporary spaces within the open loft was an idea Alessandro was intrigued with. To do this, he corporated the wooden boxes into the building’s design scheme and used freestanding furniture to divide the ‘rooms’.

White cotton cushions from Ikea and Swiss Army textile cushions by Flanelle help soften the space. The portraits of a Japanese man are by artist Pietro Manzo.

The iron fireplace designed by Alessandro makes for a cozy sitting area with sofas adapted from the wooden boxes. The coffee table with glass top is yet another piece of box furniture made by Alessandro. Rug is from Turkey, similar can be found at IKEA.
