“Let’s build a happy and bright house”, said architects Takeshi and Megumi Hosaka to their client Keigo Nishimoto, his wife and two children. The two-storey house is surrounded by a mix of buildings ranging from ten-storey apartments to office buildings. The residence stands on a foundation that sits a storey below street level. With the potential of the home being dark, gloomy and not very private, the architects focused on illuminating the interior space with natural daylight by installing 29 skylights throughout the entire home instead of using traditional windows. ‘Upon entering the building, there is so much light from the sky that it is hard to believe that the site is nested in a dark valley created by the surrounding buildings.
