Colourful apartment in Manhattan

Thomas Paul

Thomas Paul’s design philosophy is not for the faint of heart. As he declares, “I just like to take everything and make it bigger and flatter. I hate shading and texture. I want everything to be super flat, to look mechanically produced, even if it’s hand-crafted.” He has applied this view to create a wildly successful line of home accessories, including printed silk cushions and melamine tableware. His approach to decorating his small one-bedroom apartment (barely 600 square feet/50m2) in Manhattan’s mid-town neighbourhood is characteristically bold and original.

Thomas Paul mixes bold colours and patterned rugs to create a graphic space. Thrown into the mix are items from his various collections, including those of chairs, cushions, and plates. The Wire Chairs are by Bertoia Paul’s desk with old figurines collected from flea markets next to his 2nd Generation Imac

The colourful printed silk cushions, designed by Paul, are the perfect accessories for his red George Nelson daybed. On the wall in the living room is a contrast of traditional plates and a graphic black and white clock. Next to the daybed the Molded Plastic Armchair and in the front The Molded Plywood LCW Chair, both by Charles & Ray Eames
